Title:
County Wetland Inventory (Polygon)
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form:vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This polygon feature class contains information about wetland polygons, wetland category and how the majority of the boundary was collected. These wetlands were originally created from drawings from various paper maps within the planning department. Source maps used were Assessor-Treasurer 1:100, 1:200, and 1:400 scale quarter section tax maps, DNR National Wetlands Inventory maps, and Pierce County wetlands biologist maps. This dataset is shifted data that was derived from the tax parcel dataset that was digitized from paper maps and legal descriptions and 1998-2002 Orthophotography. The polygons are updated as field work is completed to verify or delineate a wetland. Wetlands are also edited when better data is available such as LIDAR (elevation) data. With the adoption of the Pierce County Directions package, on March 1st, 2004, Wetland Categories that are categorized will only include the wetland Category for that parcel. You may run into parcels next to each other that have different categories. Note: There are a number of themes that should be used cooperatively when evaluating wetlands, including: Current National Wetlands Inventory (NWI), Potential Wetlands, Soils, and the County Wetland Inventory (CWI) arc and polygon themes. The CWI layer was drawn based on the NWI layer to begin with as a reference, but only as a reference, not as the absolute source.
Purpose:
This feature class was created for a variety of purposes for County-wide use. This data will be referenced for building permit compliance, site sewer permit planning, tax parcel assessment, flood analysis, etc.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Wetlands Categories Wlcat_cd A. Category I: (150' buffer) 1. Documented habitat for endangered or threaten plants, fish, or animal species or for potientially extirpated plant species recognized by State or Federal agencies; or 2. High quality native wetland communities, including documented Natural Heritage wetland sites and sites which qualify as a Natural Heritage wetland; or 3. high quality, regionally rare wetland communities with irreplaceable ecological functions, including sphagnum bogs and fens, estuarine wetlands, or mature forested swamps; or 4. Wetlands of exceptional local significance, as designated by separate Pierce County Ordinance. B. Category II (100' buffer) 1. Regulated wetlands that do not contain features outlined in Category I; and 2. Documentated habitat for sensitive plants or fish species recognized by Federal or State agencies; or 3. Documented priority habitats and species recognized by State agencies; or 4. Regionally rare wetland communities whcih are not high quality but which have irreplaceable ecological functions, including sphagnum bogs and fens, estuarine wetlands, or mature forested swamps; or 5. Wetland type with significant functions which may not be adequately replicated through creation or restoration. These wetlands may be demostrated by the following characteristics: a. Significant peat systems; or b. Forested swamps that have three canopy layers, excluding monotypic stands of red alder averaging eight inches diameter or less at breat height; or c. Significant spring fed systems; or 6. Wetlands with significant habitat value based on diversity and size including wetlands which are: a. Ten acres or greater in size and two or more wetland classes together with open water at any time during a normal year; or b. Ten acres or greater in size, and three or more wetland classes, and five or more subclasses of vegetation in a dispersed pattern; or c. Five acres or greater in size, and forty to sixty percent open water at any time during a normal year, and two or more subclasses of vegetation on a dispersed pattern; or 7. Regulated wetlands which are contiguous with both year-round and intermittent salmonid fish-bearing waters; or 8. Wetland with significant use by fish and wildlife. C. Category III: (50' buffer) Regulated wetlands that do not contain features outlined in category I, II, or IV. D. Category IV: (25' buffer) 1. Regulated wetlands which do not meet the criteria of a category I or II wetland; and 2. Hydrologically isolated wetlands that are less than or equal to one acre in size, and have only one wetland class, and have only one dominant plant species (monotypic vegetation). E. The Category of a wetland shall not be changed to recognized illegal modifications to wetland. The blanks in field means this wetland has not yet been categorized and is currently uncoded. (150' buffer) Wetland Category Code Source: Pierce County Code "Title 18 - Developement Regulations - Critical Areas 18E.30.110 "Critical Area Resource Lands" Note: Buffer distances should be verified with the Pierce County Planning and Land Services Department.
